A closed workshop organized by Right to Nonviolence met in Beirut focusing on human rights in the curricula of higher legal education in Iraq as model for the region. The Initiative was supported by OSI, and saw the active participation of the Lebanese Minister of Justice, the President of the Shura Council, the Dean and professors from St Joseph’s University and the Deans and professors from the law schools of Baghdad, Basra, and Irbil, as well as the Regional Office for the Middle East of Amnesty International.
For the first time in history, the hawza of Najaf was represented in such a discussion, with a groundbreaking study by one of its most prominent scholars. With an extensive mapping of the curricula, both in the hawza and Divinity School of Karbala represented also by its Dean, the discussions resolved the need to develop the curricula to make human rights meaningful to the students and the citizens at large. Follow ups on the curricula in traditional and modern legal education across the Middle East were decided, together with the active involvement of the judiciary as the second phase for the Project. The debate was moderated by the chairman of RN.
