Mallat’s presentation at Salzburg Global Seminar: Nonviolence in the ME Revolution

11/07/2011

RN Chairman Mallat addressed the political philosophy and historical roots of the Middle East Nonviolent Revolution of 2011’ during the annual Board of Directors’ weekend for the Salzburg Global Seminar held June 24-26 and centered on the theme Are ‘Universal Principles’ Universal After All? Lessons from the Arab Revolt. The Seminar, organised by RN Board Member Edward Mortimer, brought together a diverse group of leading policy makers, academics, human rights activists, lawyers, and development experts to propose solutions and suggest research directions on issues of global concern. Offering a narrative counter to that of a ‘surprise’ revolution that is exclusively Arab, Mallat argued that nonviolence is a privileged means and a condition for lasting revolutionary success  in absolutist regimes.
